Myth Busted: Almond Jelly for Sore Throat and Cough

Amongst the many bullsh!t we went through last December 2016 was CMF’s sore throat and cough. My husband is such a health buff and all, he rarely goes down with something but when he does, it takes time. 

If I’m not mistaken, his sore throat and cough started last week of November and ended almost before Christmas. Imagine that. 

In one of our Christmas dinners, one of his friends suggested hot almond jelly. He said it was his go to for sore throat and cough. CMF said the same thing. His mom would give him almond jelly too when he had cough. So we ordered hot almond jelly, but the Chinese resto didn’t have it. Boohoo.

Last Wednesday, I got sore throat. And I guess it was further irritated when my friends were smoking around me. Anyway, it’s been a week and my throat is worse. I usually take Pei Pa Koa syrup and lozenges to help. But this time, it’s taking a while. I searched for natural remedies and I remembered that almond jelly thing. I searched it and didn’t find anything at all. I was expecting to find it in some Chinese herbal medicine page or something but no. What I found was gelatin! Go ahead, search for it. You should be dissolving gelatin in hot water and add honey and drink it like tea. Honey relaxes your throat, the hot water soothes your throat and the gelatin will coat it. That should give you relief. Some say it will heal you but I’m not there yet. But I do get some relief when I have my orange jelly tea!

I dissolved a teaspoon of unflavored sweetened jelly into 1/4 cup of hot water, and added 1/4 cup of orange juice. I have no other flavorings at home and don’t really want any other flavorings actually so there.

I then conclude, that almond jelly for sore throat and cough was a misconception by ye old mothers in ye old days. It was probably misheard. It should be hot jelly not almond jelly. Almond jelly is just a part of your typical panto lunch or dinner in Chinese restos hehe

I started taking meds for dry cough today and I hope tonight is the night that I get decent sleep with this cough.

Dear Lord, please heal me. Be with all those who need your healing hands.

Rainy Weather and Nilaga

I guess rainy season is really here since we’ve had 2 typhoons already in the past few weeks.

Gah. Anyway. I have cough! The bad one. I’m surprised though that I only got it now, since I’ve been on immunosuppressants for more than 4 weeks. 

A few weeks back, when the rains started, I cooked my very first nilagang baka. After 4 going 5 years of marriage, it’s my first time and attempt to cook this. And I’m so happy I was able to make the beef soft and tender. I was so happy!! 😊😊😊 (not so obvious huh?)

Cabbage, corn, potatoes, beef and broth… my awesome nilaga. Woot woot!!

This was also when I found out that the Tagalog of cabbage is repolyo! And boy, how good is repolyo in soup! I guess it’s really different when you cook than when others cook for you and you just eat. 

Since CMF loves corn, I put in corn so everyone was like “Hey your nilaga is the works ha” πŸ˜‚ but I love how I used the vegan beef cubes from Healthy Options.. I love it. A bit pricey but not bad at all. 

I hope I get to cook more good and healthy dishes in the coming days. Health is wealth!! No idea why a lot of people take that for granted.

Coffee Bags

I think the first time I tried coffee bags was 2013. We stayed in Marina Bay Sands in Singapore and this was their complimentary coffee. 

I loved it! Too bad I didn’t think of searching for it in the local groceries in Singapore.  

There’s just somethig about it.. the flavor is full despite not being freshly ground. 

I tried contacting Robert Timms Australia if I can order online but they responded flat out that they don’t ship to Manila. Such a turn off.

So I tried to look for other alternatives. When I was still working, I was able to chance upon Marks and Spencer’s Decaf Coffee Drip.. I’m not sure if that’s what it’s actually called. It comes in a blue box.. you have 10 plastic drips that you can put on top of your coffee mug and fill it up with hot water and let it drip. It was ok. It was around Php 300 so maybe Php 30 per cup. It’s not so bad but it’s not the best either. Wait wait. I’m not such a coffee drinker ha. Baka sabihin nyo, sino ba tong magaling na to! Haha I have my own (weird) taste. 

I haven’t beeing drinking coffee much. But I do when I know I’m in a good coffee place (so far what catches my fancy is Toby’s Estate capuccino and the free local brewed in Piandre hehe). But this morning I’m having Folgers Decaf Coffee Bags! It’s from my Mom’s care package hehe ❀

Super Drink!

I had a craving for my super drink 2 weeks ago. I usually get this from Healthy Options.


Ginger Tea! with lemon and Honey, Php 120. Cold or room temp, it’s awesome!

I’ll have this over any Starbucks drink anytime. 

Last week, I made my own since the ingredients are simple.

2 inches of ginger, peeled and sliced thinly (others dice it)

1 cup water

Juice of 1/4 of a lemon

3 tsps honey (I used mandarin honey)

I boiled the ginger for about 5 minutes then turned of the heat. I let it sit for 30 minutes. Then I put the lemon juice and stirred in the honey. Et voila!


Ginger Tea aka Salabat ala me!

As the nurse at Sr. Regina’s clinic said, and in the Ginger Soother bottle, ginger tea helps you calm your tummy, helps you with your fever but warms your body. I need more heat kasi. My feet are more often than not cold.

Almond Milk Panna Cotta

So after I made this, I realize I’m not craving sweets but something salty! 

Anyway, I made this from scratch. Works for me! It’s in small portion since I just tried it.

Almond Milk Panna Cotta with Coco Sugar Syrup

Panna cotta

40ml water

160ml almond milk

1 1/2 tsp unflavored gelatin (mine is sweetened and it’s just right)

1 tsp vanilla extract 


1 tsp coco sugar syrup (sorry daya!)

20ml water


On low heat, boil the water and add the unflavored gelatin. Add the almond milk and stir until they’ve mixed well. Put on ramekin or because I’m a hipster, I put mine on a mason jar heehee set aside and let cool in the fridge. I chilled mine overnight but 3 hours can do it.

For the syrup, put the water on low heat and put the coco sugar syrup in until they mix well. Let it cool then add to the panna cotta.

Yahooo!!! It hit the spot for me.

Agico Dinner and a Few More Vegan Stuff, PS: I’m not Vegan. YET.

I haven’t been eating well ever since my food restrictions. From super dairy lover to no more dairy — I cannot! But no, sorry, I can actually haha drama aside, I’ve tried vegan food several times, and to those who haven’t had vegan recently, the game has changed since our moms’, yayas’ and lolas’ cooking. So many vegan dishes don’t taste vegan anymore, they taste super delicious like they’re not vegan!

My go to vegan food before was My high school batchmate Alessa’s Pipino Vegetarian. It’s just a little too far and too much traffic, and delivery from Two Anyone is too expensive. When I was working in BGC, I frequently got Juicesabel lunch delivery. Good prices, awesome vegan dishes but oh my goodness, they’re super slow motion all the time! Even if I walked to their store and ordered take out, packing my lunch was just!

Last night was drizzly. But I’ve been eyeing Agico Vegetarian Cafe in 8 Missouri for the longest time. We often passed by their Araullo branch when I was working. But we were worried about parking so we decided to go to 8 Missouri instead.

We ordered Tokoyaki for starters, but it was 15 mins cook time so it came in last (which was not an issue at all). I had the Pinoy Best Burger, W had Wakame Burger because he said we’ve been having  too much ramen and noodles recently. And he was telling me that he’s scared because he might be hungry already by the time we walk to the car coz we’re eating vegan. Haha wrong mistake!! We already walked around the mall and saw some friends, chit chatted and we were still full! Until I got home, I was still full. So full, the 2 vegan cupcakes I got to go for dessert had to wait til the next morning! I got the apple walnut and chocolate chip cupcakes. Oh noms.

I have been busy! And I left my ipad charger at my Mom’s and she keeps forgetting to bring it for over a week now so yeah. No ipad, no WordPress!

Hmm what have I been up to?

1) Acupuncture 

I have been seeing Sister Regina Liu for infertility acupuncture. She’s quite popular and she has quite a following due to her success rate. Although I know now what’s wrong with me, I’m just being a good daughter in law, obeying what my new family thinks might help me. So yes, Tradition Chinese Medicine for me! Acupuncture’s been helping me a lot. Less stress, as in I sleep very well now. Less waking up in the middle of the night with light noises. And when I had my period, I wasn’t constipated, and it hurt much less. So I’m hopeful. I pray, I hope and I don’t worry as in St. Pio’s words!

Sister Regina has quite a list for me to avoid when it comes to food and bevs. This is the tough part but I think I’m doing well!

  • No dairy! Dairy! Me! No dairy!!! Why!!!
  • No cold drink or food
  • No fresh and raw veg. Must be steamed.
  • No coffee or any caffeinated bevs
  • Less sweets. Noooo. I’m not me.
  • No sushi. No raw anything. Goodbye uni. Goodbye.

So I’ve lost weight. From 104lbs I am down to 98 lbs again from my lst check up 2 days ago. Sad. I’ve been seeing results from my workouts and it’s sad it’s getting tougher and tougher to gain weight. But I’ll live.

2) Balikbayans!

So my bff was here for a while and we shared and airbnb with her family for a weekend. Always fun having your best friends over. She has the most adorable kids. We went to Mind Museum and around BGC. It was awesome that the neighborhood we got had everything in walking distance. Salon, bank, atm, Starbucks, restos, grocery, shopping stores, etc! 

I ordered Amber’s spaghetti, chicken, lumpia, bbq and of course pichi pichi. Too bad they were out of chicken lollipops. That would have a been an awesome hit too. I’m happy she liked the pichi, enough to recommend it to her mom and her mom ordered some too.

I’ve known her since high school and we’ve kept in touch through the evolution of communication despite the different continents and time zones. We’ve grown but not apart. Sometimes I think we’ve grown better than those that are here in Manila and those I see more often. Some things just don’t change noh? But I think she’ll say I’ve changed. As In, I’m bingi na haha

3) Appendectomy 

My bro had an appendectomy. He’s the person who doesn’t really like seeing doctors or going to hospitals. So I felt really bad when my Mom texted me that he was brought to the ER because he has severe abdominal pain. He was later discharged but he was brought back to the hospital the next day. He was operated on last Sunday. He was discharged Tuesday afternoon. I spent as much time as I can with him. I wanted to make him laugh coz I know he’s scared but duh laughing would hurt him much more. After his surgery, he was still groggy all day. I just slept on his feet until he woke up and got so bored. We watched tv and he tried to get up and walk. He’s such a fighter. My baby bro is no longer a baby. He did very well. And of course his surgeon was Ninong Rollie so he wasn’t scared as much.

4) Hash Browns!

I made hash browns from scratch yesterday. I had an awesome breakfast for lunch plate but W was so hungry he didn’t take one minute to see the aesthetics! Not to mention the huge egg! It was the biggest egg I’ve ever seen. Anyway, here are a few cooking photos:
